After my last post, Download & Burn YouTube Videos to DVD, I had the question come up about how to download Youtube videos onto an MP3 Player. If you follow the tutorial from the last post, the video that you download from Youtube is in MP4 format. You can add that video to your iPod through iTunes under the Movies’ menu. Or if you have a non-Apple, MP3 + Video player, you can add the video virtually the same way you would add music.

Now, if you just want the MP3 audio from a YouTube video so you can burn it to CD, play it on your computer, or add it to your MP3 player, then there is a nice little software program that will do the trick. Any Video Converter Freeware is the program that I use, because it’s free and you can convert video and audio to just about any other format. I’m sure there are dozens of other programs that will work just fine, this just happens to be the one I use. You can also use this program to download YouTube videos. This works really nice if there are a lot of videos you would like to download, because you can add them all at once. It will also format them for your iPhone/iTouch, which is nice, because sometimes videos I download through the browser won’t add to iTunes.

How do you download Youtube videos and burn them to DVD, such as videos from the Mormon Messages Youtube channel? This tutorial will show you how to download videos from YouTube and burn them to DVD using free software.

Here is the software you will need:
Firefox – My favorite web browser
DVD Flick – Open Source DVD Authoring Software. Use iDVD if you are on a Mac. (Tutorial for that later.)

In order to get a video from YouTube onto DVD you need to
1. Download the video through Firefox
2. Create the DVD with a DVD Authoring software
3. Burn the Authored DVD to the Disc

Download the Video

Open your Firefox web browser.

Right-click the Bookmarks Toolbar.

Select New Bookmark.

In the Name textbox, input a name for your bookmarklet, such as YouTube HD.

In the Location textbox, input the following code for the HD Bookmarklet:

HD Bookmarklet
javascript:window.location.href%20=%20'http://youtube.com/get_video?video_id='%20+%20swfArgs['video_id']%20+%20"&fmt=22"%20+%20"&l="%20+%20swfArgs['l']%20+%20"&sk="%20+%20swfArgs['sk']%20+%20'&t='%20+%20swfArgs['t'];

Follow the steps to Download the video again, but this time in the Name textbox, input “YouTube HQ” and copy the code below into the location textbox:

High Quality Bookmarklet
javascript:window.location.href%20=%20'http://youtube.com/get_video?video_id='%20+%20swfArgs['video_id']%20+%20"&fmt=18"%20+%20"&l="%20+%20swfArgs['l']%20+%20"&sk="%20+%20swfArgs['sk']%20+%20'&t='%20+%20swfArgs['t'];

You can now drag these Bookmarklets to your Bookmark toolbar. When you visit a video on Youtube that you want to download, click on either the HD or HQ Bookmark you just created, and it will begin to download. You see if a video is available in HD by looking at the bottom right of the video player and see if it has a HD or HQ button.

Create the DVD

Install and then open DVD Flick.

Add Video Files by clicking “Add Title.” The bar on the left will begin to fill up, letting you know how much space you have used.

Once you have added all your videos, click on “Project Settings” and give your DVD a name

Click on Menu Settings, and if you so desire, enable menu and pick a menu design

Burn to DVD

You can read about other DVD authoring features for DVD Flick by clicking the “Guide” button within DVD Flick.

You can have DVD Flick burn your project to DVD once it is encoded. To select this option, click on “Project Settings” -> “Burning” and check the “Burn Project to Disc” option. Click Accept.

If you want to use a different DVD burning software, like Nero or Roxio, don’t check the box.

Once you have your DVD setup how you’d like it to be, click on “Create DVD.” How long the encoding takes depends on the speed of your CPU and the hard drive that the project’s destination folder is on.

Once the encoding is complete, your project will start burning to your DVD or you can then burn the VIDEO_TS folder using your preferred DVD burning software.

Please feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions or suggestions.
